Spyder is the most common used.. and it takes only about 15-20 minutes inclusive of installation.. It is advisable to calibrate every 6 months..
With the latest gcc and lcd monitor you would barely see the difference while both are new.. but advisable to calibrate after 6 mths or so.
If you are on CRT, then you will see a lot more gamut after calibration.
