Wedding and dinner function means you need a zoom lens and also a fast aperture. Look for something like Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 or maybe the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS.

Get the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC , VC stands for Vibration Compensation, similar to Canon's IS( image stabilization. )

The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC is the best value for anyone who wish to upgrade from the 18-55 kit lens Smile The price is around 1.7k-1.8k for new one ~

The canon 17-55 f2.8 IS is way too expensive in my opinion~ (3.4k)

Agree with timothy... for event photographer flash is a must.. specially for canon user.. even if you're not using the flash the IR come with the flash can help you focus in low light....
I've been using the Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 with OIS and HSM... works quite well in most occasion.. only thing is the WB is a bit warm compare to original canon lens... this lens can also go up to 2.3:1 for some minor macro shooting.. price around 1.6k...
Tamron 17-50 F2.8 is also one of the highly recommended walk around lens...

60D? You're better off with a 550D. Don't waste your money on 60D. Or you save more go for 7D.
