Hello photonian, this topic will nvr end. as mentioned d90 & 50d are diff level of camera. one is entry and one is semi-pro. both are the mist in the phase out stage but don knw went. both camera produce outstanding photo but in tern of speed , the semi pro would lead the way. and the battery live of 50d gain the lead. but this not important to me. "After Sales Service" is the big matter here. Canon after sales service is the best in the market whr no one can come close. they are more flexible in the claim segment while "N" can't come close. i'm a person that worry of problem thats why i still prefer CANON. This is my 2cent. those who wish to change or upgrade just consider the after sales.

lots of ppl like to compare nikon and canon, i used to be like this too, after i bought canon 500d, what i'm considering is what canon lens is good, which canon model should i go, say 50d or 7d, never bother about nikon (at least at this moment)...
but they are from different technology drives and they have different know-how.
nikon good in some area and canon too...

buy what you think is good... you judge it by yourself. i'm sure you ask canon diehard fan, they pick canon... nikon diehard fand will tell you nikon... ever ending....

hehe just share to you about how i choose a electrical device (ie phone, camera, pc and etc)

1) Look at your budget
2) Filter all those over budget one
3) Compare the value among all filtered items. (Performance, and etc)
4) Make your self ranking on those items
5) Start searching the disadvantages among all the items and ask yourself whether you can accept the disadvantages (this is the most important part for choosing your item)
6) Dont waste your time, and go grab as soon as possible before out of stock. Remember~~ask for freebies if any. hehehe

Dear fellow photonian, for beginners always focus of technic and how to improve your photography skill. camera is an TOOL not a toy. unless you take it as a toy is a different story. 500d also produce stunning photos. and my image produce with my old 20d still give me an good images.

1. Camera does determine what type of picture quality you shoot. Frankly speaking Nikon and Canon have different type of pre-setting. It is not impossible to mimmic each other's character if you shoot in raw format and powerful photo editing skill.
2. Considering a camera you have to look into several conditions: what purpose you are using it for and what kind of situation you will be facing. That is why i go for 2 body : one for sports and macro, one for portrait and low light. If budget is tight, go for only one brand.
3. Always remember camera body is not the most expensive one; but investing on the wrong lens will cost you a bomb. ie: you can have plenty of crop lens but cannot be used in full body once you upgrade in the future. And also you can have full frame lens but does not perform well in crop frame body. If you look at the MTF chart for each lens, they actually perform differently in different body although they are same brand.
4. Camera body is electronic device : They will be replaced by new model very soon. ie : D90 by D100??, D50 by D60, 1DIII by 1DIV,.... so best choice is : don't buy!! Cos you will be never ending comparing the price and did not hit the right choice.
5. After all, picture quality is not the most important thing at all: shooting the right photo from the desired scenery is what we always dreaming for, of course you will also need a lot of skill: photography knowledge, camera setting, lighting effect etc.... what the heck if you use the best camera in the world but never know how to shoot? ....... pointless right?

Above is only my opinion, just to share....

strongly agree...when i was using my friend's 20d while my 500d was under repair, i found that 20d performed well too...i just loved the seperate buttons for quick access on the semi-pro camera...

zongzien, survey which model suits ur need... then try the camera from the stores and decide..after all, they are just gadgets and will soon be replaced with better technology..after getting one, learning to use the tool better will be essential...

zongzien, stop reading this post. It will make your mind crazy. Goto the shop and feel what type of camera suits u most and of course budget is the one which comes first

since D90 has nw dropped to only RM2.5k body only...y not go for it..
D90 is a nice body v lots of feature in it..photonian buying season!

Thank ur (senior & sifu) give me so many opinion and comment ,there were too many differences opinion i need time to digest and think wat i really need for , maybe i will still stick wit Canon coz (Canon Delighting Your Always) and i used to it.

hmm...should be "delighting you always, if not compared to nikon while sony is focusing on compact camera"

zongzien, I think it is best you decide which brand you going for. Because you can't be changing body now and then, maybe now when you don't have much gears. But in future when you have a lot of lens, changing system means changing all the rest.

good ... so don buy only... shoot more k ....

very good article from you Goh!! investing camera body or lenses are a different ball games for some people,but i would rather go for a better lens instead of body......coz i just got my new body wakakakaka.....lens does matter!!!

Maybe you can keep the 500D, but get the 17-50 and maybe a UWA/tele lens.

zongzien if u bought tamron 17-55mm f2.8 test the focus on the spot before u take the lens. make sure it no front or back focus problem.

Bring the focus test chart and test on the spot like Danny xD
