First question, do you know EF85mm f1.8 attached to your 450D,it effectively a 136mm f1.8 Len in term of angle of view? 85 * 1.6. due to sensor size.
Second question, you need it for portrait? I would suggest EF50mm F1.4 or F1.8. Go for F1.4 if u have the budget as Timothy suggested. But F1.8 is very cheap around RM330. Can play around with this first.
I have EF50mm F1.8 and very happy with that. took a few nice picture with that. U can see my the photo i took in this forum.
When u use this lens u need to be very close to your subject. Use diffused light and use F1.8 to make the bokeh effect more pronounce. Hope this helps.

yup, i realise about the crop factor.. i have one 50mm f1.8=) and i'm happy with it too...
but in certain cases, i feel the 50mm is too near especially when i need to stand across something that makes me with the object distance further..
that is why i always tot of getting a 85mm 1.8..

i tried this lens before edmund, nice for taking candid shots coz it's about 135mm in cropped sensor camera... picture quality wise is good too...
and i tested 50mm f/1.4... the quality and bokeh are good too... it really depends on wat you wan to shoot...
