The process of changing Canon 7D & 5D mark II's mode dial to a lock-able one
So guys, we all known that Canon announced that they are offering the services for change the mode dial of 7D and 5D mk2 to a lock-able one.Just like the what we can see on the 60D. And many are shocked for the price u need to pay inorder to change it. Becoz it is not cheap. Although the parts only cost 3000 Yen, but u still require to pay the 10500 Yen labour charge.
Lets take a look at the how it will looks like when the modification is done, here are some sample displayed infront of the counter of Canon service center in Japan.
Now we enter the service department, and yes, this girl is the technician for this modification. ( u guys sure tot all technician are mans ) In Japan , things can be different~
Okay lets take a look at how the done modified will looks like first before i show u the process ~ very nice job by the female technician, totaly doesnt looks like this camera was opened b4 , dun have to worry about the expose of the lens mount because once done modification, technician will "service" and "overhaul" the whole body , and u will get a super clean camera just like New!
Deng deng! this is all the parts required to modify the mode dial, total 8pcs of them, cost 3000 Yen, looks simple, but trust me, you wont want to try change it by yourself at home The parts are not for sell to outsider also
Okay now lets begin the process. The first step : check the physical appearance of the camera , confirmed that no problem in function , then only start the modification job.
the first step of the modification part involved "cabut kulit" ( ouch! thats hurt !) But since it is in Canon service room , no worry guys~
Take out all the screws, a lens will be mount during this process, this is to make the camera stand firm during taking those screws, guess which lens used to do such "Kuli" job? Ya u get the answer : the cheapest 50mm prime
And now take out the back cover, together with the LCD with it~ notice the pity little Kuli at the side? it suppose to be use to take picture but in here it is just a "Kuli" to help keep the camera firm who ask canon sell u so cheap 50mm f1.8 ?
front cover opened
top cover opened, the 5D mk2 is now fully naked :cool2: although just to modify the mode dial, but it cannot be done without remove all the cover.
this is the inner part of the top cover, the thing we going to modify is the silver color wheel thingy,
now take down the metal ball and spring, feel very siok when turning the dial ? this is the structure looks like~
and next, take out the screw from the inner part, take down the dial ~
now we can see very clearly the electronic tape for the mode dial , the electronic signal change each time u turn the dial, casing different mode to be selected
now take out the base of the dial
notice the base structure of mode dial are different ?
the left side is the new one (lock-able dial) and the right side is old one~
now is the time to start install the new parts, put the dial base to its place and screw it~
and this is how it loks like
To ensure the dial perfect contact with the electronic tape, a cleaning is a must to remove the dust / finger print etc~Canon told the formula and ingrediant used to making the cleaing liquid is a secret <_< this type of cleaning liquid is same used in sensor cleaning service for customer in Japan~ not sure about in Malaysia
a comparison of the bottom look between new and old mode dial , they have different pattern~
the left is lock-able
the right is the retired original one
apply some lubricant to the inner part of the dial, to provide smooter feel when u turn the it , oso act as a part of weather sealing to ur camera
spring in position
this is the new metal wheel, when the center is pushed down, it will allow u to turn the dial, this is how it works
installing the new mode dial
now screw it of course ~
and now lets check out the inner part pf the top cover after modified
lets have some comparison side by side with the top cover of 7D, the build in flash of 7D make its top cover more complex than 5D mk 2. The 5D looks much more simpler in the electronic part
instaling the metal ball
again, apply lubricant for smoother movement of the ball and metal wheel
Inner part finished !!!
now add the center lock
Now put some glue on the dial , this step is very important and very good skill are needed , the glue must be carefully apply with correct amount
The modify process are done with the label applied using hand to avoid scratch~
now clean all the pin/tape contact before reattach all the cover~
all screws return to position
The "Kuli" is once again in used~
Date need to be re-set due to the removal of the battery that used for keep ur setting during the modify process~
last~ return ur skin but this havent end the whole process, technician still have to do a cleaning process to the viewfinder, whole body sensor etc , once the cleaning process done, the camera are ready to back to its owner~
Lets see how the result looks like on 7D
5D mk2 before modify
5D mk2 after modify , we can see the center button can be push down around 1mm to unlock the dial
The 60D which oredi had it by default
Lastly, some 5D mk 2 porn~
