Am I changing to the "bright side"??? Empty Am I changing to the "bright side"???

Post by dannyk Wed Oct 14, 2009 3:47 pm

Guys, need your opinion on Canon 40D in term of performance(overall) comparing with D90 and D300.
I'm currently using D60 (for 6mths) and thinking of an upgrade to mid range DSLR....the reason, why i suddenly look into 40D is becoz of the relatively low price for a mid-high end body (RRP 3399).should be cheaper outside.

I know, right now Simmon might be saying "why not D300?".....too expensive lar Simmon.

Another reason is that, 40D body is quite solid in term of looks and feel. But have yet to play with it before...

Did a comparison on Dpreview, it seems like it has the fastest frame per second at 6.5fps comparing with D90 and D300 but maybe the LCD display quality is not so good. But a bit put-off as it's an old model d with 10.1MP only.

My area of interests are on portrait & weddings only.....

So hope the sifus around can give some comparison comments in term of price outside, picture quality and pros & cons..

Thanks

Am I changing to the "bright side"??? Empty Re: Am I changing to the "bright side"???

Post by maxgoh Wed Oct 14, 2009 4:35 pm

before i bought my D90, i was comparing 40D, D90 and 50D.

after comparing in terms of picture quality, i found it 50D is the best, then 40D, then D90.

when i comparing about price and all the lenses, i found that D90 is the best, It is because Nikon is cheaper than canon.

Then when i compare again to features, D90 is the best cuz it has HD video recorder. ( i know video is not important in DSLR world, but sometimes, we really need it.)

Now, no regret for me to get D90 but if you really think about to get canon, get 7D as a latest technology. So the several years down, you dont have to worry about getting new body. tats my opinion. Decision is in your hand~~~ hehhehehehe buybuybuy

i agree with max... if you got enough budget go for 7D... very nice camera with dual processor (correct me if i'm wrong)... if you wanna go for a bit lower range.. go for D90... very good quality takes very nice pictures... but keep in mind.. anything you choose have to be firm.. cause you don't wanna change brand in the future.. cause you a lot (mostly due to lenses)...

Wow..even canon sifu recommend to get D90...

Max, 7D too expensive for me lar. With that money, can go for D700 full frame lor.....But it seems like 40D now is cheaper than D90...
Well, video is a good feature to have but still my 2nd priority..most important is the picture quality and shutter speed.

hmm...try to ask around this weekend for price.

D90 is a good deal actually, which explains why it is so common among Photonians.

I too had to decide between Canon 40D and Nikon D90, but then decided to go D90 as it is a newer body. Besides I sort of preferred D90's menu, grip size and the dials orientation.

PS, Nikon D90 is superman, got the red underwear Razz.

hi danny,

D90 vs 40d or 50d.
just look at your dry box how many nikon lenses you have, if you have only 1 or 2, then you can jump shift to canon without major losts (duet changshong). then only you compare the functionalities of d90 and 40d/50d.

40d is 1 year older than 50d.
major differences are 1) DIGIC3 vs DIGIC4. 2) ISO1600 vs ISO3200. 3) 15MP vs 10MP.
these are 3 major things that i think why you should get 50d instead of 40d.

All boils down to your budget Danny,

50D -> D90 -> 40D, which fits best in your budget?

can vomit blood........sooner someone will recommend D3S....

Derrick,I'm using D60 and still haven't invest in any lense...so i think still ok for me to change.
Max, you have a point there but recently i'm on a tight budget...weddings.. Sad

Ok, let's do a price comparison here,

D90 (body only) - RM3200?
D90 (w/ kit lens) - RM4100?
40D (body only) - RM3399 (RRP qouted in canon web)
40D (w /kit lens) - RM3599 (RRp qouted in canon web)
D300 (body only) - RM4400 (qouted by Simmon..LoL)

50D & 7D not in my wish list, as i look into canon only if the price is cheap/affordable for me..else i will still stick to Nikon Laughing

sifus, need your input again......thx

If 40D is your only choice from Canon, then it is clear. The D90 or the D300, pick your choice Very Happy.

Besides, D90 I got it for RM4050 with kit lens, memory card, cleaning kit and bag. I think you could get a better deal at the shop in JB. Since you already have your 18-55mm lens, might as well go for the D300 body only.

i'm using 50D.. more or less same with 40D... nice ISO, nice screen, nice low noise, sharp picture (only with good lens), but the color is a bit different from nikon.. can't spell it out.. cause i'm color blind... ha ha ha.... sometimes i got problem with contrast... maybe it that the dynamic range is much different compare to our eyes...

yes, either d90 or 50d. never touch 40d lah... hahaha.

i tried d90 before, yensheng's unit, really a good camera... i think you can just get the body since your lens can be used. just trade in your d60 body...
