Canon 17-85 f4/5.6 or Tammy 17-50 f2.8?? Empty Canon 17-85 f4/5.6 or Tammy 17-50 f2.8??

Post by SeeChew Tue Mar 30, 2010 4:24 pm

I am thinking of getting a replacement lens for my kit lens. However, I found 2nd hand lens of this 2 are in the same price range. I am looking forward for Tammy as the f2.8 but canon giving extra 35mm with smaller aperture.

I will be taking more event kinda picture, just wonder will the canon be sufficient? I am sure if I go for canon, I will need a flashgun to boost the light rite?

Can shifu2 gimme some advice....plz...

Thanks.

17-50 f/2.8 with built in flash versus kit lens with flash gun. Pretty tough choice. I went with the flash gun combination first.

But I think getting the 17-50 f/2.8 first would be sweet.

i used nissin 622 before and now using 430 EX2

if got money, just buy 430 EX2 or nissin 866 or 580ex2

nissin 622 dont have high speed sync ( which is useful if shooting portrait outdoor) and cant been trigger by wireless trigger

however if no budget, just grab a nissin 622 and upgrade when u have the cash Very Happy

17-50mm f/2.8 is a good kit replacement. Superior in all aspects compared to the 18-55mm kit. Maybe you can try the 50mm f/1.8 for the bokeh Very Happy.

450D cannot do such thing. Only the 7D from Canon has such feature. (Or maybe the 550D as well?).

2nd hand stuff of course more risky, cuz u dunno got any defect or not......

450D max sync speed is 1/200, if mount nissin 622, the fastest shutter speed u can go is 1/200, at daytime outdoor can easily reach 1/1000, if u use nissin 622 to fill light, the image will be overblown cuz the nissin 622 limit the shutter speed to 1/200

however, if u mount those flash gun that have high speed sync, u can even use 1/2000 at daytime

only 7D have wireless trigger....shame on canon Sad

other option is buy wireless trigger like phottix, pocket wizard, canon ste2 etc

but nissin 622 for canon cant be trigger by any wireless trigger at the moment.....

Canon 17-85 f4/5.6 or Tammy 17-50 f2.8?? Empty Re: Canon 17-85 f4/5.6 or Tammy 17-50 f2.8??

Post by S C Goh Wed Mar 31, 2010 1:56 am

I haven't came across Canon 3rd party lens but 17-85 is definitely good for sharpness. But for low light it's not so good cos full zoom at 85mm the f-stop will auto adjust to f5.6. Definitely a flash is needed to go along with it. For lens with F2.8 you will need to check the bokeh. For canon lens none of them is definitely sharp at extreme f-stop. This means for f2.8 lens they are always sharp at f3.5 - f4, some even worse. I have both 17-85mm and 15-85mm and the latter delivers better image quality. The filter size is 67mm and 72mm respectively. Normally bigger lens lets more light transmit into your sensor thus better lighting.

i've no comment on the lens, but if i were you i would go for tamron one.

as for the nissin flash, some info to share... it has an on-body optical receiver, that means you can trigger it optically, BUT... only TTL from your pop up flash can fire it... because it sees 2nd fire (TTL fires 2 times).

and specified 3rd party wireless trigger can now trigger 622i, BUT only the newest batch of the 622i.

so, if you must do off-body flash and 2nd hand 662 is what you must get, make sure you try the wireless trigger thingy first. as the 2nd hand flash could be from the old batch...
