Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?
First of all, why all photographers love fast lens?
because some time we are not allowed to flash
some time, light too little
and most of the time, we want the subject to be stand out (thanks to BOKEH)
same thing, why all gals love diamond? the bigger the better
as a result, the bigger the pricier
why?
they are all come from same family, that is, EARTH
prime lens, it is easier to build because the manufacturer just has to ensure it is sharp at that focal length, and not much elements move inside during focusing. so, you will see f/0.95 at leica, f/1.0 on Canon L lens, f/1.2 on Canon again (good job canon) and f/1.4 on most of other brands
however for a zooming lens, one has to make sure it is sharp for entire zoom range. as u zoom, the elements inside has bigger changes compare to prime. so, to make a fast lens here, the glass must be bigger (yeah, this answer why bigger diamond more expensive lor)
so, most of the prime lens filter start from 49mm while zoom lens 77mm
all sifus, correct me if i m wrong lo... hehe

Re: Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?
i'm not really sure though...
but as i know, 18mm till 70mm range are easy to get better optical quality. so lenses at this range normally has better optical quality if you compare apple to apple. and they are relatively cheaper than other ranges...
and also i heard from a friend of mine, he said zooming power more than 5x is going to decrease the optical quality. so he never used 18-200mm or 55-250mm (for example).
wel, i have no firm answers... just share what i've been told...

Re: Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?
Derrick, for zooming power, get prime lens eg. 400m, 500m, 600m or 1000m
Re: Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?
Simmon, that one no longer considered zoom lens I think. More to a telephoto. Fixed focal range ma, "can't zoom in or zoom out".
More than 5x, my 18-105 = 5.8+. Alamak, will keep in mind on this when I shop for new lens . Thanks for the info.

Re: Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?
=.= thats the reason why the 18-105 produces such a bad quality photos. However it really good for beginner becuz it combines wide angle, portrait, tele, and little bit macro. anyway, thanks to both nice information
Re: Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?

Re: Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?
max, last time i wanted to buy 55-250, i asked my friend's opinon. he said zoom more than 5x, so he asked me not to buy.... no prove so hard to say also...
nikon kit lens (d90) is 18-105. i dare not to say whether the IQ is good or bad. but my 18-55 is a bit darker... hahaha personal feel only...

Re: Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?
yes, the higher zoom the lower its IQ
get 1.5X to 2X is enough
unless it is for light and traveling purpose.

Re: Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?
my pleasure to share
in other word, better invest into lens instead of body
for example
canon L lens 50mm f/1.0 now the price is already 5 figures
just like a diamond

Re: Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?

go flickr and search
u will see the DOF is very shallow

Re: Wanna know why is fast lens so expensive?
Put some poison
Sigma 12-24mm @ 12mm ; F5
Well, for outdoor. This lens is good; but indoor abit lose cause at max only F4.5 which is not enough especially low light environment. But since this lens built for Full Frame; well can say boost high ISO...but the image quality not tat nice loh.
Much prefer at least F4 for all rounder ($$$ VS lens capability).
No filter can b use...so have to extra careful when handling it especially crowded area. Built quality wise...as Sigma brand...ya getting closer to OEM brand lens rather old Sigma design which not so solid.
So far..quite happy about it but if budget allow; better get F2.8. Haha. (tat 1 stupid also know lah...rite?)
